Abstract

This paper looks briefly at the history and theory of social skills training and at its application with various groups, particularly mental patients, recidivists, addicts, and children. As in the case with most new therapeutic techniques, a period of rapid expansion and euphoric expectations has been replaced by a period of critical evaluation and empirical assessment. Therefore the paper also includes a section on recent developments and on the effectiveness of social skills training.
