Abstract
The person perception paradigm was used to address the effects of experimenters' ability to encode nonverbal cues and subjects' ability to decode nonverbal cues on magnitude of expectancy effects. Greater expectancy effects were obtained when experimenters were better encoders and subjects were better decoders of nonverbal cues and the separate contributions of experimenter's and subject's nonverbal skills were of similar magnitudes.

Statistically significant communication was demonstrated, with females being more accurate senders than males and several personality measures were related to communication accuracy and physiological responding.

The ability to encode and the ability to decode both visual and auditory cues were significantly related and the relationship between encoding and decoding cues of the same emotion appeared low or negative.

The way in which the experimenter reads instructions to subjects, even when instructions are read accurately, can serve as a significant determinant of the subjects' responses to an experimental procedure.

Within each of 6 elementary school grades, a randomly selected 23% of the children were reported to their teachers as showing unusual potential for intellectual gains and all Ss were administered a task designed to measure the accuracy of their perception of vocal communications of emotion by male and female speakers.

Sound motion pictures were made of 19 Es conducting a person perception experiment with 53 Ss, and Es whose experimental behavior reflected a greater task orientation, greater competence, and a more professional manner obtained ratings significantly more in accordance with their expectancy.
