[Extract] Cyclones and the associated heavy rainfall are a natural part of the tropical climate, however I the cumulative effects of 200 years of poor land management, combined with rural and urban development have possibly contributed to increased sediment loads, nutrients and pesticides being carried out to sea by rivers and streams. These impacts have covered seagrass meadows with sediments, reduced available light for growth, and in the case of coastal areas in the path of cyclones, physically removed the seagrasses.
