Anorexia Nervosa

Six patients with anorexia nervosa and extreme weight loss were placed on the treatment protocol and responded with weight gain, and at follow-up 9 to 14 months later, had maintained their weight gain.

Abstract

Anorexia nervosa frequently is difficult to treat by the time the patient seeks medical attention. A treatment protocol is presented that utilizes high-calorie, liquid food supplements and is directed solely at weight gain. No psychological issues are discussed during the initial phase of treatment. Six patients with anorexia nervosa and extreme weight loss were placed on the treatment protocol. All responded with weight gain, and at follow-up 9 to 14 months later, had maintained their weight gain. The simplicity of the protocol makes implementation possible in nonpsychiatric settings.
