Abstract
This article looks at the past, present and future of Eastern Europe in international tourism. For several decades internal flows within the Soviet bloc dominated international tourism in the region. As the nations of Eastern Europe took decisive steps towards democracy, Europe entered an era of major growth in East-West tourism in both directions in the late 1980s.
