Abstract
The idea of the basal ganglia as a collection of functionally related nuclei is based primarily on the pattern of their synaptic interconnections. The development of this idea paralleled development of methods for studying the neuron types and synaptic connections within and among the nuclei. Progress in anatomical and electrophysiological methods in the 20th century revealed synaptic interconnections with increasing clarity and greatly increased the complexity of the known basal ganglia circuits. For decades, many of the known connections have been omitted from most functional schemes of basal ganglia function, for no reason other than to simplify the circuits.
