Abstract

The present article is a study of the environmental strategies adopted by Spanish hotel establishments, and it discusses whether significant differences exist in certain organizational characteristics on the basis of the environmental strategy adopted. To achieve this aim, and in line with the main typologies of environmental strategies detected in the literature, Spanish hotel establishments are classified into four groups: Proactive, Defensive, Accommodative and Reactive. Results from the empirical analysis show that these different environmental strategies can be explained by diverse organizational features, such as size, type of tourism, together with the degree of application of Production and operations Management tools and techniques. The obtained evidence could contribute notably to a better design of regulatory schemes, both private and public initiatives, helping to isolate strengths and weaknesses of the Spanish Hotels regarding their environmental suitability. These findings also provide us with relevant hints about the better channels to be used in order to accelerate the adoption of more developed environmental strategies
