Simulation Scenario Building

This chapter describes a basic framework of questions for crafting a scenario and provides a template for the answers, which might be used in sedation, ACLS, PALS, patient history and physical assessment, or other clinical student testing.

Abstract

Scenarios are scripts, stories, or algorithms created for instructing the participants, including the simulator (human or robotic), on how to interact with the students. This chapter describes a basic framework of questions for crafting a scenario and provides a template for the answers. Individuals must follow correctly a specific pattern of responses according to predetermined criteria. This might be used in sedation, ACLS, PALS, patient history and physical assessment, or other clinical student testing. Groups of individuals use simulation to improve communication (role clarity) and to foster integration of their clinical problem-solving skills. This allows for a neutral playing field for everyone, no matter who they are, i.e., physician, nurse, respiratory technician, pharmacist, or other players. Often, this is referred to as Crisis Resource Management. The exact objectives for the training session should be laid down.
