Abstract

The hypothesis was tested that one of the ways in which reinforcing brain stimulation affects the behavior of rats is by facilitating the process of memory consolidation. Rats with lateral hypothalamic electrodes given a session of self-stimulation immediately following the training trial of a one-trial appetitive learning task showed significantly improved retention of the task 24 hr later. When the self-stimulation session was delayed for one hour after the training trial there was a greatly diminished effect on retention 24 hr later. We concluded that reinforcing self-stimulation can facilitate memory consolidation. Subsequent experiments showed that self-stimulation facilitates memory with electrode placements in the dorsolateral quadrant of the lateral hypothalamus and in area A9 of substantia nigra, but that self-stimulation does not facilitate memory with electrode placements in the medial part of lateral hypothalamus or in the pre-optic area. The evidence suggests that the facilitation of memory by medial forebrain bundle self-stimulation is probably mediated by the nigro-neostriatal bundle.
