Abstract The authors analyze the correlations of far-infrared emission of interstellar dust, galaxy counts, and 21 cm atomic hydrogen emission. They conclude that the IR signal is the best available dust indicator. The correlations also provide infomation on the inhomogeneity of the galaxy distribution and on the molecular hydrogen column density.
