Abstract
Effects of several psychoactive compounds on the resting EEG of multiple brain structures in cats have been studied. Special attention was given to those drugs known to cause alterations in cerebral biogenic amine levels. It was found that most of these substances affected the electrical activity of the amygdaloid complex and the closely related pyriform cortex. Those substances which causedelevation of brain serotonin levels reduced or abolished amygdaloid 40 cps spindling. The same effect was produced by substances causingdepression of brain catecholamine levels. It is postulated that the limbic system, and especially the amygdaloid complex, may be an important site of action of psychoactive drugs. Their effects may be the result of alterations in the balance between serotonin and catecholamine levels.
