Abstract
This paper reviews the development of an approach to leadership based on a more active conception of the follower role in reacting to leader qualities. The leader-follower relationship is seen to be affected by perceptions, misperceptions, and self-oriented biases on both parts. Greater attention to follower expectations and perceptions is emphasized.
