Abstract
HIS report on the socioeconomic distribu-T tion of cancer of the gastrointestinal tract in New Haven is the third in a series on the incidence and some of the other characteristics of cancer in relation to the socioeconomic status of the population of New Haven, Connecticut.I t deals with cancer of the colon and rectum, cancer of the esophagus, and cancer of the pancreas and compares the findings in these sites with those previously reported for cancer 01 the stomach.2Comparisons are also made with similar studies conducted in England and Denmark.T h e primary question that this research was designed to answer is: Do environmental and cultural factors associated with socioeconomic status cause cancer of the gastrointcstinal tract?Some secondary questions that were investigated are: Is socioeconomic status related to the following: the reporting of cancer, the stage of disease on admission, the reliability of diagnosis, and the prognosis? METHODT h e findings are based upon all known cases of cancer of the major gastrointestinal sites among residents of New Haven in the filteenyear period between 1935 and 1949.T h e first paper in this series2 described in detail the method used to investigate possible associations between socioeconomic status and cancer incidence.Information on cases in New Haven was obtained from the Connecticut State Cancer Register, supplemented by death certificate records.Cases werc assigned on the basis of place of residence to socioeconomic districts and larger units (composed of districts sociologically homogencous but not necessarily contiguous).T h e ecological areas employed wcre essentially those evolved by Davie of the Department of Sociology at YaIe University.T h e population base used to compute dis-
