From such extracts of rubber stoppers and of an automobile tire, eight aromatic hydrocarbons were isolated and 3,4-Benzpyrene, pyrene, chrysene, and alkyl cyclopentenophenanthrene were identified beyond reasonable doubt by their ultraviolet absorption spectra, and, additionally, in the case of pyrene and chrysenes by melting point determinations.

It was impossible to ascertain the fate of carcinogenic hydrocarbons in tissues solely from fluorescence data, and substitutes, such as naphthacene, may interfere with spectrum analysis made during the extraction of anthracene or 3:4-benzpyrene from coal tar, and similar experiments, but, presumably, such substances are not present in normal tissues.
