Abstract
SUMMARY Cephalexin is a new cephalosporin antibiotic which is absorbed when given by mouth. One hundred and eighty strains of bacteria causing urinary tract infections were tested for sensitivity to cephalexin using a tube dilution technique. Approximately 70 per cent of strains were inhibited by 10 mcg. cephalexin per ml. or less. Ten per cent of organisms were resistant to 25 mcg. per ml.

A trial to compare this treatment with Sulphormethoxine (Fanasil), a sulphonamide with a halflife in the body of about 150-200 hours, found a single-dose treatment is feasible.

A comparative study of the antibacterial activity of the five penicillinase-resistant penicillins and the thienylacetamido cephalosporanic acid in which the acetoxy 3 has been replaced by a pyridine group is investigated.

In younger male urological patients diseases with symptoms of urinary tract infection without bacteriuria were predominant, whereas prostatitis and urinary tract infections were less frequent, and in middle-aged men, urolithiasis was especially frequent, while an increasing proportion of elderly men had prostatic hypertrophy, urinary tracts infections, and recurrent/chronic pyelonephritis.

A high proportion of women with asymptomatic urinary infection had severe renal disease which was quite symptomless, and was more pronounced in those with persistent or recurrent infections.
