Abstract
Varicose nerve fibers can be observed within the lateral cerebral ventricles of the rat upon electron microscopy. They are situated supra-ependymally between the microvilli and cilia of the ependymal cells. Ultrastructural investigations have shown that the terminal axons of these nerve fibres selectively accumulate 5-hydroxydopamine which indicates that they are monoaminergic. Furthermore, with the aid of a fine-structural cytochemical technique it was possible to demonstrate the presence of an endogenous monoamine in these nerve terminals. These findings are supported by the fluorescence microscopical aspect of this and of other brain regions which revealed a varicose, amine-specific, yellow fluorescence on the free surface of the ependyma. The behaviour of this fluorescence under various pharmacological conditions strongly suggests that the amine is 5-hydroxytryptamine.
