■ Little research into stress has been conducted on nurses caring for children in hospital wards ■ Delegates at children's nursing conferences completed questionnaires which sought to identify potential work- related stressors and mediating factors ■ Quantitative analysis identified stress/difficulty in relation to various situations and caring for children with mental health problems ■ As predicted, qualified children's nurses reported lower levels of stress/difficulty overall than those without such training ■ The value of children's nursing courses and the apparent influence of the workplace on reported stress require further investigation
