Abstract
Both I131-labeled serum albumin and Evans blue showed similar patterns of accumulation in the intima of the aorta of pigs and rabbits. This was greater in the thoracic aorta than in the abdominal aorta, but within the thoracic aorta there was a variability in the pattern. There were areas of intense accumulation of protein in the sinuses of Valsalva, along the lesser curvature, and around the orifices of vessels. Diffuse chemical injury caused a general increase in the amount of labeled protein in the intima, whereas focal injury produced a local accumulation which suggested that injury may account for the increased deposition of protein. The presence of formed elements on the endothelium and the intimal edema in such regions also indicates that there may be injury in these areas.
