The in vitro interaction of selected drugs with coffee, tea, gallic acid, and gallotannic acid was examined, indicating that significant precipitation occurs for a variety of agents, including several phenothiazines, amitriptyline, haloperidol, imipramine, and loxapine.

After reviewing the side effect profiles of antidepressants, it is recommended that amitriptyline and doxepin be avoided and that the initial choice be restricted to desipramine, nortriptylines, fluoxetine, and possibly bupropion, to reduce the relatively high rate of falls and fractures from antidepressant-induced hypotension and of delirium in the elderly.
