Developments in perinatal mental health assessments

Two standardised self-rating questionnaires are used by midwives with women in their care and preliminary audits suggest the methodology is effective.

Abstract

There is substantial evidence that perinatal mood disorders are present at significant rates in the population. Despite this there are no systematic evidence-based processes in place to ensure women who suffer receive appropriate care. There is also significant evidence that early detection is critical to outcome. Arrowe Park Hospital has devised and implemented protocols to address these issues which are consistent with the National Service Framework (NSF) for Mental Health. Two standardised self-rating questionnaires are used by midwives with women in their care. Mid-range scores trigger monitoring through re-test, high scores require referral into a multi-agency approved modified mental health care pathway. Preliminary audits suggest the methodology is effective.
