Abstract
Tourist shopping villages (TSVs) combine visitor-oriented services and retailing in touring, destination or nearurban settings, and are often complemented by natural or historical attractions. This paper examines strategies for developing and planning TSVs, based on lessons and issues raised in three near-urban case studies and in the related literature. The case studies reveal similarities of form, function and planning issues, but also highlight the varying role that key entrepreneurs have played in developing this type of tourism product. Conclusions are drawn on three alternative strategies for developing a TSV.
