Abstract
Estimates of inspection time (IT) were obtained from 47 children aged between 6 years 0 months and 6 years 11 months whose Full Scale IQs (WISC-R) ranged from 86 to 136. Correlations between IT and various subtests, scales and factors derived from WISC-R performance were generally statistically significant although there was no correlation between IT and a Spatial Ability factor. The uncorrected correlation between IT and Full Scale IQ was -0.5, with those children whose IQs were below the sample average contributing more to this outcome. Moreover, the IT-IQ correlation was higher among 12 children showing less well-directed attention in the IT task. Taken overall, IT appeared to be more related to a broad intellectual capacity reflecting attentional control processes, rather than to specific abilities.
