Abstract
This volume consists of chapters that provide rich theoretical insights into the nature of self-esteem. Each chapter describes an impressive program of research; in these, self-esteem is shown to relate to diverse outcomes ranging from task performance to suicidal ideation. The purpose of this chapter is twofold: (a) to highlight the empirical trends that emerge across the preceding chapters and offer the beginnings of a unified explanation, and (b) to discuss the implications of the contributors’ theory and research (and our unified explanation) for behavior in organizational settings.
