Abstract
This article examines coordination in the remote delivery of services. An empirical investigation is presented on the coordination mechanisms employed in distributed work and the subsequent performance consequences as a function of the system being dependent of the offshored process. An overview of the theory, hypotheses, and methods of investigation are presented. Results indicate that a common ground is a distinct coordination mechanism from ongoing communication and modularity, and that the common ground could be more effective than ongoing communications and modularity for a system dependent process.
