It is shown that dichotically presented nonsense syllables with strict acoustic and phonetic control of the stimuli, generate a right ear advantage that is essentially fixed by 5 years of age.

Abstract

We have shown that dichotically presented nonsense syllables with strict acoustic and phonetic control of the stimuli, generate a right ear advantage that is essentially fixed by 5 years of age. What seems to change with age in our sample is total accuracy, phonetic content and nature of the errors, and something for want of a better term we might call "capacity" of the hypothesized left hemisphere speech processor.
