Travel photography

Abstract

Drawing on the picture postcard as one form of evidence, this paper offers some guidelines for studying the relationship between photography, ethnicity, and travel. Not only does it examine some of the ways in which photographs represent ethnicity in the context of travel, but it also describes some of the major methodological approaches that can be used in their analysis. Further, it relates photographic communication to a wider ideological discourse, and in so doing, it discusses the interplay between the particularizing features of ethnic appearances and the universalizing tendencies of photographic expression in the world of modern tourism. la photographie du voyage: une perspective méthodologique. En utilisant la carte postale comme genre exemplaire, cet article propose quelques lignes directrices pour étudier le rapport entre la photographie, l'ethnicité et le voyage. L'article examine plusieurs façons dont les photos peuvent représenter l'ethnicité dans le contexte du voyage et puis décrit quelques méthodologies importantes pour analyser ces photos. En plus, l'article lie la communication photographique à un discours idéologique plus large, et en même temps il discute l'interaction entre les traits particularisants des apparences ethniques et les tendances universalisantes de l'expression photographique dans le monde du tourisme moderne.
