Abstract
Perinatal and adult androgen treatment of female rats resulted in somatic virilization and typically masculine temporal patterning of copulatory attempts. Males administered an identical hormone regimen displayed somatic virilization intermediate between control males and virilized females. As intact adults, none of these perinatally androgenized males copulated. Even after castration and androgen replacement their copulatory performance declined below that of similarly treated control males and masculinized females. Apparently perinatal androgen treatment masculinizes females and demasculinizes males, indicating an unexpected interaction between genetic sex and hormone treatment.
