The Importance of Recreation Satisfaction and Activity Participation to the Life Satisfaction of Age-segregated Retirees

Abstract

Research has been contradictory on the importance of recreation activity participation and recreation satisfaction for life satisfaction in retirement. The purpose of this study was to distinguish the relative role of these two variables using canonical correlation analysis. The results indicated that frequency of participation in recreation activities has no significant positive relationship to life satisfaction in retirement. Satisfaction with recreation activities, on the other hand, does have a significant and positive relationship even when compared to the variables of gender, age, marital status, annual income, self-rated health, religiosity, retirement choice, and mobility.
