Abstract
This paper considers schizophrenia from a developmental perspective. Recent results from prospective studies of children at risk for schizophrenia are reviewed with the goal of identifying consistent findings across studies and developmental periods. A tentative vulnerability/stress model for understanding the development of schizophrenia during adolescence and early adulthood is proposed. This model is intended as a heuristic device for (a) integrating many of the findings from risk research, and (b) organizing assessment and treatment strategies for working with adolescents or young adults showing symptoms of schizophrenic disorders.
