Abstract
Medication nonadherence is prevalent among patients with diabetes mellitus and is associated with adverse outcomes. Interventions are needed to increase medication adherence so that patients can realize the full benefit of prescribed therapies.

2,899 Citations2003Rory Collins, Jane Armitage +3 more
Direct evidence is provided that cholesterol-lowering therapy is beneficial for people with diabetes even if they do not already have manifest coronary disease or high cholesterol concentrations and statin therapy should now be considered routinely for all diabetic patients at sufficiently high risk of major vascular events, irrespective of their initial cholesterol concentrations.

2,364 Citations1999Robert C. Turner
The proportion of patients who maintained target glycemic levels declined markedly over 9 years of follow-up, and the progressive deterioration of diabetes control was such that after 3 years approximately 50% of patients could attain this goal with monotherapy, and by 9 years this declined to approximately 25%.

These findings provide unequivocal evidence for hepatic resistance to insulin, and this evidence is substantiated by an impaired ability of insulin to suppress hepatic glucose production, which is the major determinant of the mean day-long blood glucose level.
Annals of Internal MedicineA Diabetes Report Card for the United States: Quality of Care in the 1990s
590 Citations2002Jinan Saaddine, Michael M. Engelgau +4 more
There is a substantial gap between the recommended and actual care of diabetes in the United States between 1988 and 1995, and U.S. national data is used to provide a reference and benchmark of the quality of diabetes care as measured by the DQIP indicators.
CirculationThe Multilevel Compliance Challenge: Recommendations for a Call to Action

479 Citations2005Bradi B. Granger, Karl Swedberg +7 more
Good adherence to medication is associated with a lower risk of death than poor adherence in patients with CHF, irrespective of assigned treatment, and this finding suggests that adherence is a marker for adherence to effective treatments other than study medications, or to other adherence behaviours that affect outcome.
