Abstract

Why do industries vary in their advertising intensity? In this paper, the author reviews the evidence of econometric studies and of business historians, and contributes some new findings of his own. He concludes that, of the many causes that are responsible, one of the most important and neglected is what Borden has called ‘the nature of the product’.
