Abstract
Abstract This article aims to present a research history highlighting the role of residents within tourism systems. It has detailed demographic, economic, environmental, political and socio-cultural impacts on a resident population. It is argued that residents and their stakeholder groups are critical components in successful tourism systems. It is further argued that ongoing investigation of residents and stakeholder groups within diverse tourism environments is essential to our understanding of the complexity of tourism systems.
