What does connecting Paperguide to my assistant do?

It lets Claude, ChatGPT, and other AI assistants use Paperguide while you chat. Your assistant can search Paperguide's research database, read the papers in your reference manager, and save and organize papers for you. It works through MCP, an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to outside tools.

Which AI assistants does it work with?

Claude (web, desktop, and mobile), ChatGPT, and any assistant that supports MCP connectors, including Cursor, VS Code, Codex, Windsurf, and Claude Code.

Do I need a Paperguide account?

Yes. You sign in with your Paperguide account once, when you connect. That's how your assistant reaches your reference manager.

Where do the answers come from?

From the same 200M+ paper database behind Paperguide's AI Search, or from your own reference manager, whichever you ask for. Your assistant shows the papers it used, so you can check every source.

Can it read the full text of my papers?

Yes. For papers with a PDF attached, your assistant reads the full text and points to the page each passage comes from.

Can it change or delete things in my reference manager?

It can add papers, attach PDFs, create and rename folders, and file papers into them. It can't delete anything. In a shared reference manager, it follows the same permissions you have in Paperguide.

What happens with paywalled papers?

Open-access PDFs are found and attached when available. If a publisher blocks the download, your assistant tells you, and you can upload the PDF in Paperguide instead.

Does it work with my team's reference manager?

Yes. If you belong to an organization on Paperguide, you choose which account to use when you connect. To switch later, disconnect and connect again. If your organization has more than one reference manager, just name the one you mean, for example "in the Lab Shared library."

Does using Paperguide through my AI assistant use credits?

Some actions, such as searching for papers and reading PDFs, use your Paperguide AI credits. Adding references, attaching PDFs, and organizing folders do not use credits. Automatic screening in a systematic review uses credits.

Why don't I see citations in ChatGPT?

In regular ChatGPT chats, ChatGPT uses Paperguide's results but doesn't show them as citations. To get citations, use Deep Research and select Paperguide as a source before you start.

When should I use Paperguide directly instead?

Use your assistant to find, save, read, and organize papers mid-conversation. Come to Paperguide for work that needs a full workspace, like screening and data extraction in a systematic review, and writing.
